James Cole Elementary School received a Kiwanis Foundation Grant to assist its efforts toward implementation of the Cole Professional Academy. The $500 grant will assist in offsetting costs associated with this home-grown program that is being implemented for the first time this school year with Cole fifth graders. The Cole Professional Academy is a program which provides fifth graders with guest speakers and experiences based around a monthly theme highlighting Professional (Soft) Skills. One afternoon a month is dedicated to exposing the fifth graders to a variety of themes including Dressing for Success, Manners, Etiquette, Personal Safety and Responsibility, Service to Others, Personal Integrity, and Success at Home. Each student is provided a white collared Cole Professional Academy shirt, a personal ID, and have a chance to earn badges upon completion of monthly tasks that support the academy's mission. Students are also paired with a staff member mentor whose job is to suport the child throughout the school year toward the program's goals. Students earning all Professional Academy badges and meet attendance and participation requirements will be honored at a graduation celebration in the spring.
