A mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. When most successful individuals are asked what contributed to their professional achievements, the support of a mentor is often cited. At James Cole Elementary School, as part of the Cole Professional Academy, each fifth grader is paired with a staff member who will serve as his/her mentor throughout the year. This mentor will meet at least once a month with the student to assist him/her with the responsibilities of the Cole Professional Academy. This mentor will also serve as a model for what a mentor can look like in the future. As part of the Cole Professional Academy, students are also asked to identify a mentor at home. This could be a family member, neighbor, or trusted adult friend. The concept of mentoring is new to many of the students. It is the hope that by being intentional about modeling and explaining the benefits and attributes of a mentor, students will find greater success in their future. Positive relationships matter. At James Cole Elementary School, the staff mentor program is hoping to cultivate these relationships and open doors in the future for its students.
