Anglers of all ages grabbed a spot along the banks of the pond at the Cole Elementary School Outdoor Education Center September 11 to participate in a fishing derby. 

Ten volunteers from Keep Stockwell Beautiful helped with registration, lunch and keeping score. When someone caught a five-inch fish, that person received five points. “We had a total of 86 people and 43 of them were Cole students,” says organizer Tammy Sipple. “Prize categories included most points, largest fish in length and smallest fish caught and several door prizes.”

“We have a beautiful outdoor education center that our students and staff frequently use for instruction,” says Principal Mike Pinto. “This event allowed parents and the public to visit this space. It was so rewarding seeing the banks filled with children fishing alongside parents, grandparents, and friends.” 

Parent Lindsey Kemper says the fishing derby was a wonderful experience: “My fondest childhood memories were the simple ones such as fishing with my father. It warms my heart to see my daughter, Scarlett, spending quality time with my dad learning how to fish. They make a great team. Fishing is a favorite pastime for both of them.”

Organizers are already making plans for another fishing derby next year.
