The gymnasium was filled with 1950s jukebox music as the kindergarten and first grade students at James Cole Elementary danced, hula-hooped, and had lots of fun at the recent Sock Hop. The kindergarten and first grade teachers offered this event in place of a traditional Valentine's Party. Students had a chance to test their skills at hoola hoops, rope jumping, race at a cruise-in with tiny toy cars, create art, test their skills at hopscotch, have their image captured in the photo booth, and enjoy a root beer float. The students were very involved in this event - most dressed in poodle skirts or t-shirts, rolled up jeans, and sunglasses. Parent volunteers were everywhere - offering assistance and support while making this event possible. The sock hop encouraged movement and downplayed the traditional large amounts of sugared snacks at a traditional Valentine's party. Many memories were made during the Sock Hop. Next year, instead of a sock hop, the teachers plan a "Fairy Tale Ball".
